really trendy

Kardashians and Jenners: The Trendy Bunch?

it is little wonder that trends come and go. like heidi klum puts it in project runway, 'one day you're in and the next day, you're out!' reality television series have a unique way of creating trends; at times, these trends are deliberate and others, accidental. for this post, let's examine some of the trends that caught on.

1) she bangs

now who can forget the person who start it all? william hung, a contestant on american idol, found fame not as a top singer but as a personality that audiences came to adore. if you forgot who he is, here's a clip to jolt your memory.

anyway, after the 'william hung' craze, the entire trend of 'personalities' surfaced in talent competitions. people started to realise that talent was not as valuable as a unique selling point.

the question was, what was the unique selling point that the masses was craving for? (i hope it's not a pair of yellow trunks or a hoarse-y rendition of 'don't cha') this remains a question that i probably have no answers to.

2) the white tee
i don't know if this can be touted as a trend but it seems like judges (simon cowell and adam levine in particular) made it part of their regular get-up. well the white tee is nothing new to The Online Edition, considering that i have already featured it here. it is interesting to note that, when it comes to clothes, there will always be classic pieces that never go out of style.

3) prints

this is one scary trend that i wish never made it to the screens but it did. i enjoy prints but to see it splashed everywhere is too much of a safari for me. prints should always be in moderation or a fashion afterthought and i blame the following reality stars for making it seem that too much prints is acceptable.

anyway, the trends that made it here are plonked here because the posts for the rest of the week don't have much room for them. my advice for you: do visit The Online Edition regularly over the week and we shall discuss in further detail the fashions of reality television.

barely there...

for those who are familiar with broadway, you would have heard about broadway bares. nope, not my opening post. anyway, broadway bares is the 'inspiration' for this week's theme actually. i know, it's ironic that for a fashion blog, the idea to feature the clothes of musical theatre came from a production that hardly has any clothes on. therefore yes, not every theatre production creates grandeur through costumes and fashion, some are memorable from the lack of clothes.

Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS

well, broadway bares is part of a greater movement called broadway cares / equity fights aids. broadway cares / equity fights aids is an american non-profit organization, headquartered in new york city, new york. it is the theatre community's response to the aids crisis. by drawing upon the talents, resources and generosity of the theatre community, on broadway, off-broadway and across the country, the organization raises funds for aids-related causes across the united states. since its founding in 1988, it has raised over $175 million for critically needed services for people with aids, hiv or hiv-related illnesses.

broadway bares is an annual burlesque show fundraiser for the organization, founded by jerry mitchell in 1992. broadway dancers and actors perform striptease dances for the audience at the roseland ballroom in new york city for two shows only in June. it combines the naughtiness of burlesque and the razzle-dazzle of broadway. the broadway bares events had raised $5.5 million as of 2010.

before you go into the 'there he goes again, featuring naked bodies to get a couple more hits' again, i actually find a production like broadway bares highly interesting because it is a style of theatre, though raunchy, highly entertaining. after all, the theatre is a space for our imaginations to run free and let's all admit it: sexuality and sensuality sells!

so at the end of the post, i am going to leave you with a flood of g-strings, thongs, lingerie and body paint. (not posting videos here because they are a tad too 'interesting'... but you can find most of them online.)

broadway bares xviii: wonderland

hope you enjoy the tongue-in-cheek costumes of broadway bares!

paws' pal

from clothes to 'hair', accessories and now to shoes! doggy shoes, boots and booties are becoming the latest in a long line of popular doggy apparel accessories. in winter temperatures (unlike tropical singapore), frozen sidewalks and snowfall on the way, many pet owners are contemplating protecting their canine’s paws with a snug pair of booties – but do dogs really need shoes?

image from famecrawler

it turns out that in many cases dogs really do benefit from protective paw wear, and in other instances dog shoes can provide an extra layer of comfort and safety. but it takes a special kind of dog shoe to conform to the movements of a dog’s paw, and some types of shoes can actually limit your dog’s ability to walk or run.

while dog shoes provide protection against frost bite, scrapes and cuts caused by sharp ice during extreme winter sports, they can also protect the paws of our everyday canine friends too. dog shoes can offer an extra layer of support and safety. during extreme hot or cold temperatures, dog shoes can protect paw pads from frostbite in the winter and burns from hot asphalt in the summer. dog shoes with traction bottoms can help dogs with mobility problems.

no slip dog shoes can be especially beneficial for senior dogs with arthritis or hip dysplasia when walking on slippery or frozen surfaces. for dogs that enjoy swimming, dog shoes can help to protect paw pads from cuts or scrapes caused by contact with underwater rocks or sharp objects. risks for accidental scrapes or paw pad tears during short or long hikes can be reduced with protective dog booties. dogs who have nerve damage in their legs or backs which cause hind legs to drag can benefit from protective booties. the booties in these cases can prevent scrapes and tears on the tops of the paws if paws drag a bit while the dog is walking.

the best types of dog shoes are shoes which conform to the shape of the paw and which allow regular paw movement. these dog shoes look a lot like slip-on covers, and they often come with Velcro straps at the top. dog shoes to avoid are the types of shoes which are created to look just like people shoes. these stiff shoes may look adorable on dogs, but dogs cannot walk well in them and may even end up hurting themselves. if you choose dog shoes for your dog, make sure they are a comfortable fit which facilitates the full mobility of the paws – and that the tops of the shoes are secure but not too tight.

as for the cat owners, i'm sorry to disappoint you but seems like most owners are not for the idea of puss-in-boots.

Puss-in-Boots!

maybe this is acceptable?

Puss in a Boot?

this forum is just one of the many that oppose to cat shoes.

freaky fashion - the capes

so yesterday, i shared with you about my experiences at a halloween event. so after we talked about where to go, let's talk about what to wear. in fact, for the whole of today, i'm going to focus on what you can wear to a halloween event if you plan to go in costume.

for those of you who are regular readers of the online edition, you know there are three posts a day so do come back later in the day (and night) to check out the other two types of outfits that you can don during halloween.

by far, the capes / robes are the easiest of any halloween outfits. before i flood this post with images, a little more on capes. a cape is any sleeveless outer garment, such as a poncho, but usually it is a long garment that covers only the back half of the wearer, fastening around the neck.

in addition, capes (robes) gives a sense of mystery, that there is something lurking underneath. of course, if you wear a black cape and you open it up, the association with bats (or batman) is almost immediate and we have all heard of stories of how bats drink blood or how bats are actually vampires, hence enhancing the whole 'halloween' effect.

from a fully fashion point of view, it is probably the easiest of all costumes. you can put it on within seconds, if you have a body to die for, then your halloween costume (which requires minimal time to put) can be this...

but since most of us would prefer to exercise a little 'humility', here's a look at possible halloween outfits.

mirror, mirror on the wall

who's the fairest of them all?

would it be Snooki from Jersey Shore, Mariah Carey, Fann Wong or Nicole Kidman?

or does Gisele Bundchen reign supreme?

the notion of a fair beauty has always been a hot topic for discussion. does fair beauty refer to porcelain white skin or is it about the features? that pair of striking eyes, the nose with the perfect angle, the jawline that is oh-so-perfect!

in singapore, the Asian trend is often for ladies to go fair and the men to go tanned. guess that has to do a lot with our cultural roots. fair ladies helps one associate with the notion of the gentle women sewing in the confined spaces of their ancestral homes. whilst, men have to adopt the tanned skin tones... the hours we spent not working but lazing by the pool under the blazing sun just to adopt that bronzed, golden brown tan (of course, there is indoor tanning now...) why do men do that? when one is tanned, one is linked to hard work... ruggedness... everything 'manly'...

culturally, we don't seemed tolerant of tanned ladies... the ladies from my dragonboat team have often had to endure snide remarks because of the tan that they sport... you know what? that's your own problem in life, not theirs... like a saying that has been going round, 'ladies are not expecting you to be Brad Pitt, so why are hoping that they become Angeline Jolie?'

so if we are going to experiment with colours, prints and fabrics in the world of fashion... surely, the skin should be a palette of colours too... so whether you are black, white, tanned or fair, i say, work your colour...

love you girls... BAM!
