men of fashion

if men want to be fashionable, the best place to start is to learn from fashionable men. the three men that i have selected are not only fashionable themselves. their names are their brands, brands that not only men should know but brands that women have come to be very familiar with. let's see what the buzz is all about.

1) marc jacobs

The Brand

marc jacobs is an american fashion designer. he is the head designer for marc jacobs, as well as marc by marc jacobs, a diffusion line, with more than two hundred retail stores in eighty countries. he has been the creative director of the french design house louis vuitton since 1997. jacobs is on time magazine's '2010 time 100' list of the 100 most influential people in the world and ranked 14th on out magazine's 2012 list of '50 most powerful gay men and women in america'.

The Man

over the years, marc jacobs' personal style has evolved and changed - from the early days of his career through to his butterfly-like transformation into the gym-honed body that appeared naked in his bang fragrance campaign; from a penchant for somewhat geeky ensembles to the kilts and sharp suits that we expect from him now. as creative director of louis vuitton and designer of two eponymous lines, he is also a style icon in his own right.

The Empire

jacobs is famous for his sense of humour, which has been known to colour his catwalk creations and he's not afraid of a fancy dress opportunity: he wore head-to-toe stephen sprouse neons by vuitton and donned a blonde wig for Halloween one year, once dyed his hair blue in tribute to japanese artist takashi murakami and dressed as a 'camel toe' for his arabian nights-themed holiday party. here is a man who counts sofia coppola, dakota fanning and even miss piggy as muses.

2) jimmy choo

Jimmy Choo

jimmy choo, born choo yeang keat, is a malaysian chinese fashion designer based in london, united kingdom. he is best known for founding jimmy choo ltd that became known for its handmade women's shoes. he made his first shoe when he was eleven years old. he is perhaps the most notable of students of cordwainers technical college in hackney, england, from which he graduated in 1983. jimmy choo traced his beginnings back to his workshop in hackney, north london, which he opened in 1986 by renting an old hospital building. his craftsmanship and designs were soon noticed and he came to the verge of international notability when his creations were featured in a record eight pages in a 1988 issue of vogue. patronage from diana, princess of wales, from 1990 further boosted his image. in 1996, he co-founded jimmy choo ltd with british vogue magazine accessories editor tamara mellon.

Princess Diana with sons, William and Harry

in april 2001, choo sold his 50% stake in the company for £10 million. he has since concentrated his work on the exclusive jimmy choo couture line produced under license from jimmy choo ltd. when you buy a pair of jimmy choo shoes at a store like bergdorf goodman or neiman marcus, they may be gorgeous and they may bear the 'jimmy choo' label but the ready-to-wear shoes are not designed by jimmy choo.

Jimmy Choo Couture

today if you want shoes that actually have anything to do with jimmy choo himself, you'll have to purchase them from jimmy choo couture. available by appointment only at 18 connaught street in paddington, london, england.

3) calvin klein

Calvin Klein

calvin richard klein is an american fashion designer of hungarian origin who launched the company that would later become calvin klein Inc. klein was born in the bronx to jewish-hungarian immigrants. he did his apprenticeship in 1962 at an oldline cloak-and-suit manufacturer, dan millstein and spent five years designing at other new york shops. in 1968, he launched his first company with a childhood friend, barry k. schwartz.

Spring / Summer 2012 featuring Lara Stone

klein became a protégé of baron de gunzburg, through whose introductions he became the toast of the new york elite fashion scene even before he had his first mainstream success with the launch of his first jeans line. klein was immediately recognized for his talent after his first major showing at new york fashion week. Klein was hailed as the new yves saint-laurent and was noted for his clean lines.

klein's design philosophy is rooted in minimalism (extreme simplicity) and is known for his 'casual chic' clothing, stylish but casual designs created for active women. he typically uses neutral colors or earth tones (browns) and designs separates (articles of clothing designed to be worn interchangeably with others to form various combinations) that work in many different ensembles, from day to night and season to season. at the same time his advertising for jeans and fragrances was being criticized, calvin klein clothing was receiving critical acclaim for its clean, modern lines. time magazine named klein one of the twenty-five most influential americans in 1996. klein won the prestigious coty award three times in a row (1973–1975), becoming the youngest designer to ever have that honor. in 1982, 1983, and 1986 he also captured the council of fashion designers of america award. klein is undoubtedly one of the most successful american clothing designers today.

phoenix fashion

in chinese culture, if dragons represent the men, the phoenix is then symbolic of the women.

Phoenix Rising

the phoenix is a mythical sacred fire bird that can be found in the mythologies of the arabian, persians, greeks, romans, egyptians, chinese, turks and indians. it is described as a bird with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). it has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. the new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self.

in some stories, the new phoenix embalms the ashes of its old self in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the egyptian city of heliopolis (literally 'sun-city' in greek). it is said that the bird's cry is that of a beautiful song. the phoenix's ability to be reborn from its own ashes implies that it is immortal, though in some stories the new phoenix is merely the offspring of the older one. in very few stories they are able to change into people.

while it is going to sound corny, i am going to feature the city of phoenix.

welcome to Phoenix

the history of phoenix as a city begins with jack swilling, a confederate veteran of the american civil war (1861–1865), who had come west to seek wealth in the 1850s, and worked primarily in wickenburg. on an outing in 1867, he stopped to rest at the foot of the white tank mountains. swilling observed the abandoned river valley and considered its potential for farming, much like that already cultivated by the military further east, near fort mcdowell. the terrain and climate were optimal; only a regular source of water was necessary. the existence of the old Hohokam ruins, showing clear paths for canals, made swilling imagine new possibilities.

the city of Phoenix by night

swilling had a series of canals built, which followed those of the ancient native american system. a small community formed that same year about 4 miles (6 km) east of the present city. it was first called pumpkinville, due to the large pumpkins that flourished in fields along the canals. later it was called swilling's mill in his honor, though later renamed to helling mill, mill city, and finally, east phoenix. swilling, being a former confederate soldier, wanted to name the city 'stonewall', after general stonewall jackson. others suggested the name of 'salina'. however, neither name was supported by the community. finally, lord darrell duppa suggested the name 'phoenix', as it described a city born from the ruins of a former civilization.

but how does the city of phoenix relate to fashion? if you have not heard of phoenix fashion week, you are pardoned (because i was just as ignorant). in order that we don't fall too far behind, here are a few clips from this year's phoenix fashion week.

the best and the worst: week 04

another week has passed us here on The Online Edition. this week has been a crazy one. it was a glimpse into the future. i resumed work and that translates into time away from the computer. in a way, i did factor this 'back to work' issue in hence i tried as far as possible to keep posts simple and pictorial. the regular writing is still there but there is less thinking and analysis required.

a few things that made me smile this week:

1) stable numbers... we (yes, all your credit!) are averaging slightly above a hundred views daily. that's really not too bad for someone who has been blogging for a month. thank you to everyone who shared the posts, linked it, tweeted, re-tweeted and favourite-d the material on this blog. i really see the healthy traffic as a combined effort.

2) strong partnership... it's always great to have help. friends telling me what they like and don't like about my blog, the way i write and the material i put out. all these are impetus for me to improve. i must do a big shout out to sherlyn for offering to resolve the problem that you see here. she told me to send her some html thingy which i have no clue what it is. =)

3) support... to those who ask me how the blog is doing and continually inspire me to write. it's a blessing writing about you and for you.

so yes, it's been a fulfilling week but we still have to deliver the results (cue drum roll). here is the best of the week...

this post was written with a whole lot of tongue-in-cheeks (not literally!) but it was to introduce to you how i function as a writer / blogger. there are serious elements in the post but ultimately, read the online edition because you would like to go on a learning journey like me or simply for a good laugh. everyone has good days and bad days but everyday should be a day filled with laughter. oh, and i do apologise for misleading ALL my readers with the images, but since i did it once... here's another!

Girls Generation with 2PM
before we move to the worst post, i just want to mention the post on hairdo. although not the best, it pulled in very strong numbers within the first hour of posting. so if you have yet to read it, i've linked it here. okay, execution moment...

when i compiled the weekly views and results, this came as an 'ouch' moment because i thought initially that a certain post about five emerging designers will garner no attention. in addition, the second post of friday is usually one of the strongest in terms of content so that i can get a decent number of views (of course, i'll pair it with shameless marketing!). this week, the friday posts sadly did not deliver. lesson learnt... moving along. haha.

on a final note, i am going to make a couple of shameless marketing plugs... do look out for the next 'fl@me or fr@me' on sunday midnight. then add me on twitter and like my facebook page! thank you.

five designers you must (also) know

while planning for this post, i had a nasty thought. i wanted to prank everyone and feature interior designers, flooring designers, lighting designers and the list continues... but i resisted. so i will just be a very, very subdued blogger and feature five designers that are not from the large fashion houses but you should know as well since they are touted as the rising stars of the fashion industry... so there will be no karl lagerfeld, armani or valentino.

hope you like their presentations and shows... The Online Edition will be following the careers of these five rising stars very closely.
