vintage icons: audrey hepburn

audrey hepburn was a british actress and humanitarian. recognised as both a film and fashion icon, hepburn was active during hollywood's golden age. she has since been ranked as the third greatest female screen legend in the history of american cinema and been placed in the international best dressed list hall of fame.

Audrey Hepburn

born in ixelles, a district of brussels, hepburn spent her childhood between belgium, england and the netherlands, including german-occupied arnhem during the second world war. in amsterdam, she studied ballet with sonia gaskell before moving to london in 1948 to continue ballet training with marie rambert and perform as a chorus girl in west end musical theatre productions.

after appearing in several british films and starring in the 1951 broadway play gigi, hepburn played the academy award-winning lead role in roman holiday (1953). hepburn remains one of few people who have won academy, emmy, grammy and tony awards.

she appeared in fewer films as her life went on, devoting much of her later life to unicef. although contributing to the organisation since 1954, she worked in some of the most profoundly disadvantaged communities of africa, south america and asia between 1988 and 1992. she was awarded the presidential medal of freedom in recognition of her work as a unicef goodwill ambassador in late 1992, but a month later, aged 63, hepburn died of appendiceal cancer at her home in switzerland in early 1993.

five skirts to know

frankly, if till this point in life, the only skirt you are familiar with is an upskirt... you are in big trouble, whether you are male or female. fret not, help is on the way. so this morning (unless you are my readers from the other side of the planet) i'm going to dish out the five skirts that you should know. this is as basic as it can get... if you want a more extensive write-up, please refer to my very good friend: wikipedia

wear the pencil skirt like Eva Mendes and Gwyneth Paltrow

1) straight skirt or pencil skirt, is a tailored skirt hanging straight from the hips and fitted from the waist to the hips by means of darts or a yoke. it may have a vent for ease of walking

Katie Holmes and Kim Kardashian in A-line skirts

2) a-line skirt is a skirt with a slight flare, roughly in the shape of a capital letter A

3) pleated skirt is one with fullness reduced to fit the waist by means of regular pleats or folds, which can be stitched flat to hip level or free-hanging

Sarah Jessica Parker in a boho circle skirt

4) the circle skirt is cut in sections to make one or more circles with a hole for the waist, so the skirt is very full but hangs smoothly from the waist without darts, pleats or gathers

Jessica Simpson in a leather hobble skirt

5) a hobble skirt is long and tight with a narrow enough hem to significantly impede the wearer's stride

王薇薇

while looking at some of asia's biggest names and their fashion, i was constantly reminded of a name because of a deal i struck with a couple of girlfriends. if my girlfriends got married by a certain age... i would buy them a gown by 王薇薇... obviously, i didn't keep my promise... haha. but the mention of 王薇薇 made them squeal with joy... who exactly is 王薇薇?

yup... 王薇薇 is Vera Wang. mention the name, every girl thinks about their dream wedding and walking down the aisle with that perfect gown... in the same breath, every man stops breathing for that moment because of the price tag attached to a vera wang gown. yet, the one line that best sums up our sentiments towards vera wang gowns comes from kate hudson, bride wars (2009)...

you don't alter Vera Wang; you alter yourself to fit Vera...

here are some of gowns by vera wang...

if you came here (by accident) and are looking for a vera wang gown... here's some help!
