really judges

in the world of reality television, judges come in various form, shapes and sizes. there are those who are experts in their respective fields, some who are there for mere entertainment and of course, the audience play judge for some shows as well. just a side note about audiences as judge, do you notice how when contestants are eliminated from a show (via audience vote), the studio audience seems surprisingly alarmed and shocked at the results? excuse me, the fellow is given the boot because you didn't vote, what's so surprising about that? get a grip yourself.

anyway, here's a look some of my favourite (current and upcoming) judges from reality television!

1) america's next top model: the jays

The Jays

what's not to love about the duo of 'miss j. alexander' and jay manuel?

i was pretty disappointed with the firing and the latest season just seems a little lacklustre. miss j is always quirky and unexpected. jay manuel, with the cool hair colours, is the mentor to the girls. both of them brought a nice balance to the show. well, we can only remember them in images.

2) american idol: nicki minaj and mariah carey

Mariah Carey, Ryan Seacrest & Nicki Minaj

these two have made headlines even before the show is on-air. if you don't know what i'm talking about, here's a clip.

anyway, i'll be watching this duo closely because in terms of body shapes, they are rather similar. both mariah and nicki are curvy so it'll be interesting to see what the stylists present them with.

3) the apprentice: carolyn kepcher and ivanka trump

women in power suits! enough said, haha! personally, i think seeing women talk business on television is a huge source of inspiration for womenfolk especially in asia where many still think that the world of business is primarily for the men.

anyway, beyond the apprentice, both women often go for classic cuts and simple dresses.

freaky fashion - the centrepiece

in marketing and advertising, we learn that sexual images and innuendoes always sell. you are sure to get a lot of attention (especially if you have the goods to match). so if you want a ton of attention, dress down... skin tight is not good enough, there must be skin.

you can go tribal...

never mind if your hair or makeup is out of place, most will not notice if you choose to turn up as the skimpy (oops, i meant sexy!) centrepiece.

mirror, mirror on the wall

who's the fairest of them all?

would it be Snooki from Jersey Shore, Mariah Carey, Fann Wong or Nicole Kidman?

or does Gisele Bundchen reign supreme?

the notion of a fair beauty has always been a hot topic for discussion. does fair beauty refer to porcelain white skin or is it about the features? that pair of striking eyes, the nose with the perfect angle, the jawline that is oh-so-perfect!

in singapore, the Asian trend is often for ladies to go fair and the men to go tanned. guess that has to do a lot with our cultural roots. fair ladies helps one associate with the notion of the gentle women sewing in the confined spaces of their ancestral homes. whilst, men have to adopt the tanned skin tones... the hours we spent not working but lazing by the pool under the blazing sun just to adopt that bronzed, golden brown tan (of course, there is indoor tanning now...) why do men do that? when one is tanned, one is linked to hard work... ruggedness... everything 'manly'...

culturally, we don't seemed tolerant of tanned ladies... the ladies from my dragonboat team have often had to endure snide remarks because of the tan that they sport... you know what? that's your own problem in life, not theirs... like a saying that has been going round, 'ladies are not expecting you to be Brad Pitt, so why are hoping that they become Angeline Jolie?'

so if we are going to experiment with colours, prints and fabrics in the world of fashion... surely, the skin should be a palette of colours too... so whether you are black, white, tanned or fair, i say, work your colour...

love you girls... BAM!
