massaro

after much extensive coverage on haute couture clothes and jewellery, there is one aspect left to share before we bid farewell to our 'haute couture week': shoes. of course, we did feature some pretty interesting shoes last week but this feature of shoes is in a different league.

beautiful shoes are the details that create a distinctive allure and silhouette. this is even more so when they complement haute couture labels. for decades, massaro has been accentuating couturier collections and every season’s shows by creating unique accessories, the perfect final touch to the fashion message that the designers wish to convey.

when raymond massaro met gabrielle chanel, she took great pleasure in telling him about the incredible working relationship she had built up with his father. so it was perfectly natural for coco to continue her association with the firm that created her famous two-tone sandals at the end of the 1950s.

since then, massaro has become the exclusive supplier for chanel haute couture. in the run-up to the fashion shows, a certain intensity fills the workshops: the first sketches arrive from the studios on rue cambon which need to be worked up. and, as for any other customer, a model is created, examined, revised and approved, in this case by karl lagerfeld.the talents of the massaro workshops are sought after by other couture houses and many designers: the order books are filled each season with prestigious names. when the fashion show season is over, the same names send their special customers, knowing they will find the ideal accessory to perfect a suit, a cocktail outfit, an evening gown or wedding gown.

the goths

YES! it's finally here. the long-awaited post on gothic fashion. before i overwhelm you with images and a full fashion show, it's only fair that we learn of the origins of the gothic movement.

the goth subculture is a contemporary subculture found in many countries. it began in england during the early 1980s in the gothic rockscene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. the goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era, and has continued to diversify. tts imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from the 19th century gothic literature along with horror films and to a lesser extent the bdsm culture.

typical gothic fashion includes a pale complexion with colored black hair, black lips and black clothes. both male and female goths wear darkeyeliner and dark fingernails. styles are often borrowed from the punks, victorians and elizabethans. bdsm imagery and paraphernalia are also common.

in 1977, karl lagerfeld hosted the soirée moratoire noire party, specifying "tragique exigée absolument noire" (totally black tragic dress required). the event included elements associated with leatherman style.

goth fashion has a reciprocal relationship with the fashion world. in the later part of the first decade of the 21st century, designers such as alexander mcqueen, rick owens, gareth pugh, ann demeulemeester, rodarte, hedi slimane, john richmond, john galliano, olivier theyskens and yohji yamamoto brought elements of goth to runways.

this was described as 'haute goth' by cintra wilson in the new york times. thierry mugler, claude montana, jean-paul gaultier and christian lacroix have also been associated with a gothic style. in Spring 2004, riccardo tisci, jean-paul gaultier, marc jacobs and stefano pilati dressed their models as 'glamorous ghouls dressed in form-fitting suits and coal-tinted cocktail dresses'. swedish designer helena horstedt and jewelry artist hanna hedman also practice a goth aesthetic.

before and after

keeping in the spirit of all things children... this post will be dedicated to how some big names in the fashion world looked while they were still children... so let's start the ball rolling...

any guesses to who this little boy grew up to be? the answer will be revealed at the end of the post... but here are more faces that continually impact the fashion world...

our covergirl! need i say more? i loved watching ellen while i was growing up. i didn't understand many of her jokes but i'm so happy for her... she's like the best friend that everyone would love to have growing up... if you missed her covergirl commerial, click here...

yes, yes, her songs are great... her acting is brilliant... her mark on the fashion industry, other than being stunning on the red carpet? beyonce has her clothing line, yo! it's the house of dereon!

liz hurley (or elizabeth hurley)... associated with estee launder for over fifteen years... imagine that! on top of that, she was the face for a host of other brands... liz hurley now owns her own line, elizabeth hurley beach...

it's jenny from the block... jennifer lopez (sidenote: i love dance again!!!) long story short, show stopper on the red carpet and at events... well, in the fashion world, she has her own lifestyle brand.

last but not least, paris hilton... rich, beautiful and oh-so-perfect (okay, maybe not perfect but i actually like her...) her estimated net worth as of 2012 is $100 million... a fashion line may not be her thing but bags are...
