Kardashians and Jenners: The Trendy Bunch?

it is little wonder that trends come and go. like heidi klum puts it in project runway, 'one day you're in and the next day, you're out!' reality television series have a unique way of creating trends; at times, these trends are deliberate and others, accidental. for this post, let's examine some of the trends that caught on.

1) she bangs

now who can forget the person who start it all? william hung, a contestant on american idol, found fame not as a top singer but as a personality that audiences came to adore. if you forgot who he is, here's a clip to jolt your memory.

anyway, after the 'william hung' craze, the entire trend of 'personalities' surfaced in talent competitions. people started to realise that talent was not as valuable as a unique selling point.

the question was, what was the unique selling point that the masses was craving for? (i hope it's not a pair of yellow trunks or a hoarse-y rendition of 'don't cha') this remains a question that i probably have no answers to.

2) the white tee

i don't know if this can be touted as a trend but it seems like judges (simon cowell and adam levine in particular) made it part of their regular get-up. well the white tee is nothing new to The Online Edition, considering that i have already featured it here. it is interesting to note that, when it comes to clothes, there will always be classic pieces that never go out of style.

3) prints

this is one scary trend that i wish never made it to the screens but it did. i enjoy prints but to see it splashed everywhere is too much of a safari for me. prints should always be in moderation or a fashion afterthought and i blame the following reality stars for making it seem that too much prints is acceptable.

anyway, the trends that made it here are plonked here because the posts for the rest of the week don't have much room for them. my advice for you: do visit The Online Edition regularly over the week and we shall discuss in further detail the fashions of reality television.

vintage men

i know, most of you will be blasting me for how little coverage i am giving when it comes to vintage styles for men. well, don't blame me. i wish that i was a trendsetter back then too but in the past, men's fashion was a tad bland hence the less attention given.

One Direction goes vintage?

however, once you understand that fashion is a never-ending cycle that always takes on a modern-day twist, the possibilities for style become endless. vintage clothing has always been a popular phenomenon, but knowing where to find it, how to wear it and which era is 'in' is the ultimate challenge.

from the '50s to the '80s (and soon the '90s), everything from saddle shoes and spandex to big collars and big hair eventually sees a reemergence on the fashion scene. every era has a comeback, as today's designers simply update the styles from other time periods. so basically, it's the concepts from different decades that return, rather than the actual article of clothing. 

here are some items that one can include in their closet to achieve that retro-look!

1) dirty denim

otherwise known as 'washed-out' or 'distressed', this denim is treated to give jeans and jean jackets a second-hand look.

2) button-down shirts

popular vintage-looking collared shirts include 'utility' shirts; a button-down with a small chest pocket on one side and a patch or insignia that reads 'joe's gas station', for instance. you can also find shirts, in either brown, blue or green, with some stripes on the shirt, usually in another shade of the shirt's base color. another popular vintage detail is a shirt collar made from a different fabric, usually a knit.

3) converse and nike

the '80s have returned in full force, especially in the world of sports apparel. you can find old-school white nikes with the original nike 'swoosh' in most sporting goods stores. even '80-style converse all-stars (low or high-top) have made a huge comeback.

4) sunglasses

oversized shades are super popular for men and they're reminiscent of the good old '60s and '70s. even '80s-style aviators are flying high on the fashion scale.

if i ever get married, have children and i have a daughter... i will put her in a tiara and a tutu dress at least once... i'll take lots of pictures because it seems that once girls grow up, the entire princess look and outfit does not seem to fit anymore... even brides with tiaras do not sit well with me... i know, it's strange but each time, my reflex reaction is... GROW UP!

so if you are a parent, do this while you still have the chance to!

i really wanted to write a ton of cruel comments and remarks about their outfits but who cares about fashion? these children are having fun so i'm not going to be a wet blanket and spoilt the fun... at least not till they turn 18...
