the best and the worst: week 13

so we made it pass the three-month mark! applause, hugs and pats all round. thank you for all your support. if you are reading this post, it shows that you still believe in the potential of The Online Edition, even though i may not. this has been a bad week for readership. i'm not even going to try to mask things. i first thought that the slump during jennifer week was acceptable because it was not fully fashion in its nature and it was more of a week to take minds of the hardcore fashion material.

i really expected a much better showing this week with vintage fashion but the truth is, page views were dismal. i can get through a good part of the day without any hits on the blog at all. very disheartening i must say. with such poor figures, it always dampens the mood and then i fall into the cycle of asking if i should continue blogging. 

well, let's just observe things till the end of the year and if i don't recover from the reader recession, i'll probably need to re-invent The Online Edition.

anyhow, your readership still matters because it determines who gets a second feature at the end of the week. this week, your hits decided the following:

the best: taking ad-vintage

as always, the opening post is a crowd favourite because most like to know about the week ahead. what direction i am taking for the rest of the week and a glimpse into the material that i would cover. or simply, they just like the half-naked hunks and bikini babes at the end of the post. either way, it doesn't matter. if it keeps people reading The Online Edition, it has to be something good.

the worst: vintage icons: audrey hepburn

this post really burnt. i am not afraid to reveal the number of individual hits it garnered - nine. this has to be one of the lowest 'single-post' readership so far. either the subject of 'audrey hepburn' has been done to death or it's just not captivating enough.

in conclusion, we now bid farewell to the past and look forward to a new week! meanwhile, have a wonderful weekend.

the best and the worst: week 12

what an interesting experience this post is. here i am, sitting in my suite in penang and writing my first post. if i were any regular blogger, i would not have to bother about the timing and release of my posts. however, on The Online Edition, it is my personal standard that the writing does not get affected no matter which part of the world or time zone i am in. so yes, the blogging continues. 

back to the material of the week. readership fell drastically this week. i'm not fully certain if it was due to the erratic theme that i adopted. conceptually, i enjoyed the idea but in reality, i guess it didn't sit well with readers. after three months, i must say that i have a better grasp of readership patterns but the struggle then comes, who to place first? my writing, ideas and concepts or the readership figures. in seeking out the balance, we reveal the best and the worst of the week.

best: i am jennifer nettles

this was a close fight between jennifer nettles and jennifer aniston. surprisingly, not many people were interested in the jennifer lopez post especially since she held her debut concert in singapore. that said, i'm glad to have introduce jennifer nettles to many of my friends who, otherwise, would not know who she is.

worst: i am jennifer scherman

oops, it happened again. the curse of the final post. haha. well, i take it in good spirits. also, it is a pretty obscure personality so naturally, the views and hits would be much lower. that said, i always think that a person who passes on does not disappear as long as we continually share and talk about them.

the best and the worst: week 11

ah, that time of the week again. this post has gone beyond just evaluating the weekly material that i put out for you. in fact, it's become that moment of the week when i sit down in front of my laptop and reflect on my week: the good, the bad and the ugly. simultaneously, i will be scrolling through all the posts that i put out throughout the week and under what conditions each post was written.

so a highlight of the week for The Online Edition would definitely be crossing the 15,000 page view mark. it did take a whole lot of shameless marketing and spamming to get there but i am thankful for everyone who helped me. also, this week, the daily readership hit an all-time high as well. i finally had a day that crossed the 400 barrier. that is most definitely encouraging.

a not-so-good moment would be bidding farewell to two of my regular weekly features. you can read about it in the post just before this one.

anyhow, let's not delay the results of the week since there is something that i would like to share at the end of the post.

best: this is what i men-t

you know you'll have a winning post when you use labels like Beyonce Knowles, Jay-Z, Justin Bieber, Kristen Bell, Penelope Cruz and Selena Gomez. these are big names that will garner big hits. the idea of using them was really to draw interest to a rather dull topic. guess the experiment went well and shot the post right to the top!

worst: men and colour

this post is similar in nature to the best of the week. personally, i found the topic a little uninteresting because colour choices, in this day and age, have become subjective and men have found ways to wear even the 'most feminine' of colours. in a way, i went on with the post because i felt the need to explore what was accepted as convention.

the best and the worst: week 10

wow, it's been ten weeks already? i really find it a little hard to accept that The Online Edition has gone on for over two months now. as always, i would like to take this time to thank you for all your support. i may never know who you are and shake your hand but i deeply appreciate your regular readership and input.

before, i go in depth to this week's post, i would also like to make a quick announcement: i have a hater! *pops confetti* not exactly a hater perhaps, but someone who finally has an issue with my material. if you want to read her comment, it's posted on my facebook page. it's basically a response to this post. friends of mine who saw what cindy wrote had a few 'interesting' remarks for her but i shall reserve those for coffee talk.

okay, back to this week. i selected the fashion of broadway and musicals as the source of inspiration for my material. big mistake? i think so. not only was readership hit (pretty badly too, i must say.), even the writing of it was a tedious process. many of the dresses look amazing on stage and dazzle audiences but there is often not much information available about them. halfway through the week, i learnt that as a fashion blog, people can get overwhelmed by looking at dress after dress without any guidance. i would loved to evaluate the various outfits and trends showcased by the musicals but there was a huge limitation of resources available. nevertheless, i hope you enjoyed looking at the array of broadway costumes.

so, (channeling my inner tyra banks) i have fourteen posts in my hands. the first post i call will be best post of the week and it goes to...

best: viva la evita

i think the page views on this post were high not for the fashion but the personality who was involved. i mean, seriously, any post about madonna would garner some (if not a ton of) attention. the funniest part  is the fact that madonna was not even in the broadway musical. guess that's how the world of blogging works. until i have an actual following, i would have to depend on names and labels to carry my blog numbers.

worst: the broadway princesses

*wails* i like the princesses! it was a bit disappointing that my love for the disney princesses was not shared by everyone else. what's not to love about fantastic lives and fabulous gowns? on one hand, it was good to break the friday curse of worst post being the afternoon post (it's now the friday morning post!) but to see a post that i had fun putting together was a weird feeling. oh wells, the show goes on.

with that, we bid farewell to the stages of broadway and return to reality where the weekend awaits. have fun! like i tell my team mates: fall in love, get married, make babies... in whatever sequence you prefer.

the best and the worst: week 09

this, by far, is one of my favourite weeks as a blogger. yes, the hectic schedule is there and trying to find every available moment to put in posts was tough but the best moments came when i introduced my blog to more friends and i see them cringe. that is the exact reaction i wanted from readers this week. the selection of content and images were meant to provoke a response. 

after the initial 'eek-ing', my prayer was that there would be conversation on the things that they saw on my blog. increasingly, i am beginning to believe that fashion is truly a conversation. the attitudes of fashion and movement of trends is a continual exchange of ideas. this week, the quest for beauty sailed to the extremes and i must admit that i am overall pleased with the results and responses.

however, i may be glad, we still have a job to do and that is to reward and demerit. here are the results:

best: ties that bind

this post was a 'painful' post to write because no matter how one tries to cushion the material and the angle, the act of feet binding is brutal. i would like to sugarcoat the ideas behind breaking the bones of young girls and limiting their movements but i just could not. there is not explanation to such cruelty. it is definitely good that this was the best post of the week. i am hoping that everyone would then pause to reflect on the modern day parallels. have we allowed ourselves to 'bind feet' just because we want to achieve a certain stereotype?

worst: hair i am...

i think the pattern is clear. the final friday post... and most of my friends agree that it is really a factor of time that the second friday post of the week garners a lot less attention even after much marketing efforts. 

overall, readership numbers are very encouraging. not sure if i have found the formula for The Online Edition yet but it's wonderful to know that whatever i am doing, you are enjoying it. thank you!

the best and the worst: week 08

what an interesting week this was! in particular, president barack obama was re-elected into office for a second term. 

hugz!

in the last forty years of american history, no incumbent has been returned to office with a national unemployment rate over 7.5%. the current unemployment rate in the usa is 7.9%. of course, here in singapore, most that i spoke with are happy with the win. i do have certain opinions about both camps but i shall reserve them for coffee talk.

anyway, this week was a return to fashion writing. though i need to confess that there was not much writing that needed to be done. a large portion of it was to copy, paste and format. that said, it was a good return to talking about clothes as compared to history and animals. 

so, any lessons that i learnt this week? definitely! i am no longer an over-achiever but i have gone past that to become an over-doer. i just keep doing. keeping an exercise regime, going to work and writing... i have somewhat figured out a system that i have to strictly adhere to in order for my life to not spin out of control. *pats on the back* i live another week to write you the best and the worst.

best: haute, haute, haute

everyone loves a title with a double meaning. i guess it's always encouraging to have readers appreciate the wit. i can write nasty and flaming posts like these but i do it not out of spite or malice. instead, it is to make readers laugh. laughter, i strongly believe, is the best medicine. anyway, it's good to see the opening post of the week make it to number one again (the last time this happened was in week four). personally, i actually like the first post of the week because it usually coveys my personal thoughts and the 'writer' in me speaks more freely. once the rest of the week's material come about, i am often bounded by the content.

as for the worst post of the week...

worst: massaro

why, why, why? i actually like the material in this post and i thought it would be refreshing for readers to realise that haute couture is not all about clothes. shoes form an integral part of couture fashion as well. plus, massaro does have an entire range of pretty footwear. it was a tad disappointing to see the post fall flat with a single digit readership. hopefully it gets better. this is the third time that the final 'content' post hit rock bottom. well, let's hope that it doesn't happen too often.

in closing, i truly appreciate ALL your support of The Online Edition. it's wonderful to see unique views daily but what gets me going are also all the return visits that you make to this blog. that shows my writing is interesting and relevant enough for a second glance. i will try to better myself with each week!

the best and the worst: week 07

it's judgement time again. time for me to take a closer look at all the various posts that i put out during the week and evaluate how well they sat with readers. if you are wondering how i go about the decision for the best and the worst, here's how:

1) unique hits: if you were directed here from my twitter or facebook, that would score as a unique hit. blogger has a counter function so i can track exactly how many hits came via that channel.

2) spike in traffic: after a post goes live, some may not click on the link but will visit the blog via the generic web link hence each time i publish a new article, i will track the general blog traffic to see if it is a popular post.

3) facebook likes, shares and retweets: this is the last factor but it is monitored as well.

anyway, back to this week of animals. there were many struggles this week in writing about animals and fashion. the main reason was the amount of material that was planned and then later dropped. for instance, yesterday's discussion on dragons, phoenix and unicorn were really smokescreen posts. the original posts were titled, 'i've got your covered: fur / feathers / hair'. it was meant to be a discussion of the production of fur, feathers and hair but i realised that it was too difficult to direct the material towards a neutral point. hence at the eleventh hour (literally minutes before the first post went live), i pulled the plug and rushed in new content. truly, there is no lack of good reference material for the topic of animal and fashion but until, i was ready (or at least felt ready) to take a stance, which i alluded to here, i rather not deal with certain subject matter.

perhaps i would have a decision somewhere down the road but let's compile the results and give you what you came here for. 

the best: iconic creatures

i liked this article. i really do. it was a 'lightbulb' moment while planning for the week's posts that i realised that many brands and logos used animals. hence i did a little snooping around to uncover the truth behind the animal of choice. the more interesting background stories would have to be the playboy rabbit and abercrombie & fitch moose. anyway, clarence apparently has an interesting picture for abercrombie & fitch singapore so i pulled it off his blog for you... here it is!

the worst: furry's fit

for a post that has an interesting thumbnail, the hits were shockingly low. in fact, it is an all-time low. even at the time of writing, the unique views remain at a single digit. in case you are wondering who the cat was supposed to be, it's anna wintour from american vogue. maybe we need a pair of shades for the feline fatale! 

so the fates have been sealed. your best and worst posts of my seventh week as a blogger. it's going to be an exciting weekend for me. i'll be at dragonboat races!!! however, circulation of The Online Edition resumes just before the stroke of midnight on sunday with 'fl@me or fr@me'!

the best and the worst: week 06

and so, we sailed to the end of the sixth week of blogging (the first week of writing was purely experimental). for the entire week, my focus was on the history of fashion: looking at different periods, eras and movements. i have learnt of many of the periods in school from the angle of the literature that was written hence putting the various posts together was somewhat a stroll down memory lane. the struggle, though, was trying to find a balance between keeping the posts reader-friendly whilst being informative. putting a hundred years of fashion history into a few paragraphs was no easy feat but i'm pleased that (after much reading, cutting, copying and pasting) i did it anyway. thus i hope that you enjoyed this little learning journey that i 'forced' everyone to participate in.

without further ado, let's reveal the best of the week!

best: the ancients: china

yay for china! in researching for this post, i was taken aback to learn that the qipao or cheongsam was not the first outfit of the chinese. there was even an earlier post devoted to it. i have always been brought up thinking that the traditional outfit for the chinese was the slim fitting dress with the mandarin collar and the cloth buttons. whilst putting together this post, it was truly a lesson in my own culture and heritage. i haven't gotten round to asking my chinese friends but i am certain that many of them will be as surprised as me that the hanfu is the true traditional outfit. 

and the post that is the worst of the week...

worst: the goths

i think the goths took the bottom of the pile this week for a couple of reasons. firstly, it was the last article to be released in the week so there is always a huge risk that there is insufficient lapse in time for it to climb the charts. it is evident from the numbers this week that time was against the post. next, here in singapore, it's a public holiday (and thus a long weekend) which naturally translates into people not at work or at home. i can't expect everyone to stay home just to read my blog. i'm certain that the post will gain readership in the days to come but as of the weekly tally, it's the worst post of the week.

i don't think it's a bland post. it's just the bad timing.

the best and the worst: week 05

first things first, thanks to all your support and constant readership, it's kept me writing and this post is our 100th post! *claps claps happy dance*

'the best and the worst' post is one of the toughest to write weekly because of the constant change in tally. what do i mean, if you (the reader) decide to tweet about a certain post or share it on your social media platform, it could very well change the rankings which means the best and the worst is never certain till the very last moment.

this got me thinking about the week that went by here on The Online Edition. many days when i put out material, i am highly uncertain if it is going to be a hit or miss, but i learnt that lesson last week. this week is really about the end result. writing this post is much like life itself. we cannot truly conclude till the final moment. i was just at dinner with a teammate, lots of thoughts were exchanged; some confidential, others not so but i really got down thinking on my way home. there will always be a 'best' and a 'worst'. the important lesson is to accept both and then continue growing from there...

well enough of my ramblings, the results are in. here is your best post of the week...

best: spooky clothes

(*shameless self-praise alert*) this was truly expected. in fact, i knew that it was either this post or one of the other two that revolved around the review of sentosa spooktacular (spooky faces or spooky mess) that will become top of the week. in planning the material, i put myself in the shoes of the reader. would i really just want to know 'oh, the event's scary!' or is there a fresh insight? guess i found it and hit the nail on the head. not only did the post make it to best of the week, it is now an all-time favourite too. i'm glad my difference in perspective has earned the validation of readers.

and the worst post of the week is...

worst: pretty bloody

you know how when you have an interesting post before, it is a tad tough to outdo yourself. this is the gist of the struggle i had. coming into this post, it was a difficult game to beat. from reviewing an event to the fashion of halloween and then the makeup, i felt fatigue in putting out so much material about halloween hence i decided to keep it a lot simpler. was it deliberate? partly, i guess. like earlier mentioned, there will always be a post that needs to take the bottom so unfortunately, it's just pretty bloody at the bottom.

usually, in the midst of the best and the worst, i will also make certain recommendations that i think you should read. well, since it's the 100th post, i would ask that you read the very first post on The Online Edition and join me in this moment of reflection.

the best and the worst: week 04

another week has passed us here on The Online Edition. this week has been a crazy one. it was a glimpse into the future. i resumed work and that translates into time away from the computer. in a way, i did factor this 'back to work' issue in hence i tried as far as possible to keep posts simple and pictorial. the regular writing is still there but there is less thinking and analysis required. 

a few things that made me smile this week:

1) stable numbers... we (yes, all your credit!) are averaging slightly above a hundred views daily. that's really not too bad for someone who has been blogging for a month. thank you to everyone who shared the posts, linked it, tweeted, re-tweeted and favourite-d the material on this blog. i really see the healthy traffic as a combined effort.

2) strong partnership... it's always great to have help. friends telling me what they like and don't like about my blog, the way i write and the material i put out. all these are impetus for me to improve. i must do a big shout out to sherlyn for offering to resolve the problem that you see here. she told me to send her some html thingy which i have no clue what it is. =)

3) support... to those who ask me how the blog is doing and continually inspire me to write. it's a blessing writing about you and for you. 

so yes, it's been a fulfilling week but we still have to deliver the results (cue drum roll). here is the best of the week...

best: five things you should know

this post was written with a whole lot of tongue-in-cheeks (not literally!) but it was to introduce to you how i function as a writer / blogger. there are serious elements in the post but ultimately, read the online edition because you would like to go on a learning journey like me or simply for a good laugh. everyone has good days and bad days but everyday should be a day filled with laughter. oh, and i do apologise for misleading ALL my readers with the images, but since i did it once... here's another!

before we move to the worst post, i just want to mention the post on hairdo. although not the best, it pulled in very strong numbers within the first hour of posting. so if you have yet to read it, i've linked it here. okay, execution moment... 

worst: five applicable applications

when i compiled the weekly views and results, this came as an 'ouch' moment because i thought initially that a certain post about five emerging designers will garner no attention. in addition, the second post of friday is usually one of the strongest in terms of content so that i can get a decent number of views (of course, i'll pair it with shameless marketing!). this week, the friday posts sadly did not deliver. lesson learnt... moving along. haha.

the best and the worst: week 03

arh... it's that time of the week again. time to sit down and think about ALL that has happened... the good, the bad and the not-so-goodlooking (yes, ugly)! so 'flame or frame' was released as a new weekly feature but that will not be part of the consideration for best and worst because its regular slot will be sundays... but i must confess that i am secretly pleased that the actual views of the first 'flame or frame' did not hit sky high figures... it's somewhat indicative of how my readers are not here for the dramatic.

personally, it was a fast-paced week with paris fashion week and all the shows to keep up with... on top of that, there were all the various reports and reviews that i wanted to read... (there is a hidden agenda... *blush*) but yes, on one hand, there was fashion week to keep up with (for those of you following the saint laurent feud, oh the DRAMA!)... on the other, my own material that i need to put out... but i survived, so together now, everyone! *pats on the back*

anyway, this week, the spotlight was on children... the fashion trends, the people (big and small) and a couple of lessons that we can learn from children... it was fun doing the background work... 

some insights... 

1) it's almost impossible to find children pictures of designers (which was the original angle of this post) 

2) everything that children wear seem acceptable and permissible (more details here) and thus the cancelled post mentioned in 'flame or frame: issac ritz' was a easy cut... i guess if you are young, innocent and adorable, there are no real fashion faux pas

and onto the results... best post of the week...

best: pageant children

this is not a surprising best post because people have strong social views about pageants... when it comes to children, these emotions and sensibilities are heighten... i'm divided on this issue though because i always believe that some children shine on stage and we should allow them to do so just not with too much artificial enhancement... but if they are not well-trained and prepared for the stage, we are just treating children as objects of our entertainment.

as for the worst...

worst: designer children

i thought this was an interesting angle to pitch... children of designers who design for children... but granted, Ming and Aoki Lee have been discussed so extensively in fashion and reality that they are probably their own brand. the girls should have their own series! lesson here: nice post but a tad dated... (note to self: must stay current!)

but we learn and move on... the only consolation is that views for the worst post of this week are still higher that last week's... haha... that's an improvement right? (oh come on, some validation will help...)

so as this week wraps up and we enjoy the weekend... The Online Editor soldiers on to another week... what's in circulation next week? only time will tell...

the best and the worst: week 02

if there is one lesson that i can take away from blogging this week, it would be this... not everything that i find interesting is interesting... some of the posts (actually most of them) fell flat. though i claimed to be not too concerned about the figures this week... the whole 'i'm not a fashion writer but a writer of fashion' mantra, it stinks to know that no one is reading your material especially when it was such a good week previously.

so what were the aims and objectives of this week?

1) tap into my asian, national and racial influence which i did, evidently from all the posts...

2) try to find material that would score higher page views with readers from asia. as of now, singapore and the usa dominate my readership but i do hope to write material that people from other asian nations can find relevant as well... this didn't go so well...

3) less fashion, more writer... i deliberately took a backseat on the fashion critique and tried to hone in on viewpoints... more like a bystander of the fashion world and style... perhaps, it's how the posts were pitched... but i learnt. hopefully there will be a better balance in weeks to come.

haha, what's not to love about this post? comic relief, trunks, close-up of trunk in trunks, lots of 'glad i'm not the one wearing that' moments, lots of 'what were they thinking?' moments... and of course, we love our country... a little national pride goes a long way... (helps when the thumbnail is of a bunch of guys in trunks too!)

and now, the worst post:

WORST: asia's fashion weeks

this was the second 'heavier' post of the day (third numerically)... usually, the first and third posts are the ones that i put the more interesting content. the post just before this one was about po from kungfu panda... i personally thought that readers of a fashion blog will not take too well to it but surprisingly, it scored pretty high on the views. 

well, my personal prediction was actually romancing singapore... cos it was not a well thought-out post... i had ideas but when it came to writing it, boy, was it tough... 

to conclude... this week was definitely not as good in terms of the readership (which i expected) partly cos the hype is no longer there and the writing was a slight departure from the regular fashion material... but no worries, there will be fashion writing... you just have to check back regularly!

so i finally wrapped up a full week of blogging... it's been a challenge learning about the world of blogging... writing the posts are one thing, getting people to read them is another... of course i became a shameless opportunist, getting my friends on facebook and twitter to visit my blog often just for the spike in numbers...

of course there were hits and misses this week... i'm not expecting everyone to love everything i put out but i'm learning so bear with me...

my thoughts: pretty surprised this made tops... i'm not certain if it was due to the Jessica Simpson label, or maybe it was the male model... of course, i'm trying to convince myself that people were genuinely interested in their set of pearlie whites... anyhow, this one took the top spot.

WORST: Faces and Looks of Chanel

my thoughts: i must admit that this is a shocker given the (shameless) labels i had. perhaps you don't want just pictures... even my silly announcement that i'm on twitter (speaking of which, do follow me @TOnlineEditor) and my *yawn* post about household bleach got more unique views ... this was a tribute to Chanel for crying out loud... so i am still in shock... well, what's done cannot be undone...

ps: the numbers are compiled based on the individual hits on the posts... also i did roughly monitor the spike in page views for the entire duration of the post...
